W Abu Dhabi is your Yas Island weekend sorted
The hotel that makes a Formula 1 weekend or theme park trip feel effortlessly cool.
“You've got tickets to Yas Marina Circuit or a Ferrari World day planned and you want a hotel that doesn't feel like an airport Hilton — this is the one.”
If you're heading to Yas Island — whether it's for the Grand Prix, a long weekend hitting the theme parks, or one of those "let's just get out of Dubai for two days" trips — the W Abu Dhabi is the answer you keep arriving at. It's the only hotel on the island that manages to feel like an actual destination rather than a pit stop. You're not staying here because it's convenient (though it is). You're staying here because it turns a theme park trip into something you'd actually post about.
The building itself is impossible to miss — it straddles the Yas Marina Circuit like a spaceship that decided to land on a racetrack. At night, the LED canopy that wraps the entire structure shifts through purples and blues, which sounds gimmicky until you're standing underneath it with a drink in your hand and realize it genuinely works. The whole thing was designed to look like nothing else in Abu Dhabi, and it delivers on that promise without trying too hard.

The room situation
Rooms lean into the W brand's whole "we're a nightclub that also has beds" energy, but in a way that's aged reasonably well. You'll get deep purples, moody lighting, and floor-to-ceiling windows that either face the marina or the circuit — and that choice matters more than you think. Marina-view rooms are quieter and better for couples. Circuit-view rooms are the move if you're here for race weekend, obviously, but they also catch more morning light, so factor that in if you sleep late.
The beds are genuinely excellent — firm enough to support you after a day of walking Yas Waterworld, soft enough that you won't wake up stiff. Bathrooms are spacious with rain showers and decent water pressure, and there's enough counter space for two people's toiletries without a turf war. Charging situation is solid: outlets on both sides of the bed, plus USB ports, which sounds basic but half the hotels on this island still make you crawl behind a nightstand.
The pool deck is the real selling point. It wraps around the building with views of the marina on one side and the circuit on the other, and the vibe on weekends is somewhere between relaxed beach club and hotel pool — music playing, drinks flowing, but nobody's going to spray champagne on you. During Grand Prix weekend this becomes one of the hardest spots to get a lounger on the island, so if you're here in November, get down early or accept your fate.
“It's the only hotel on Yas Island that feels like a destination, not a place you sleep between roller coasters.”
For food, the on-site options are fine but not why you're here. Garage is the all-day dining spot and does a solid breakfast buffet — worth it if you have a big day ahead and want to load up. For dinner, skip the hotel and walk to Cipriani or Stars 'N Bars at the marina, both within ten minutes on foot. The lobby bar, W Lounge, is good for exactly one pre-dinner drink and no more — the cocktails are competent but priced like they contain gold leaf, and the music volume creeps up after 9pm in a way that makes conversation difficult.
The honest warning: sound insulation between rooms isn't the W's strongest feature. You will hear doors closing in the hallway, and if your neighbors are pre-gaming for a night out, you'll know about it. Request a corner room or a room on a higher floor away from the elevators. This is especially important during race weekend or any major concert at Etihad Arena, when the hotel fills with groups who are not here for early nights.
One thing nobody mentions: the lighting in the hallways shifts colour as you walk, synced to the building's exterior canopy. It's a small, weird detail that makes the walk back to your room at midnight feel slightly cinematic instead of the usual beige-carpet shuffle. The staff also have this casual energy that's rare in Abu Dhabi hotels — friendly without the stiffness, which sets the tone for the whole stay.
The plan
Book at least two months ahead for race weekend (prices triple and sell out), but for a regular weekend you can usually grab a deal a couple of weeks out. Request a marina-view corner room on floors six or above — you'll dodge hallway noise and get the best sunset angle. Do breakfast at the hotel, dinner at the marina. Use the pool before 11am on weekends to guarantee a lounger. Skip the minibar entirely — there's a convenience store at the Yas Mall a five-minute drive away. And if you're here for a theme park trip, the hotel concierge can sort fast passes, so ask before you queue online.
Book a marina-view corner room, eat breakfast in, walk to Cipriani for dinner, claim your lounger early, and text your friends that you found the only cool hotel on Yas Island.
