Manor House Hotel And Golf Club

Pantaðu þetta ef You want to live out a Downton Abbey fantasy in the literal prettiest village in England and don't mind creaky floors or a lack of air conditioning.

Af hverju fólk elskar þetta

  • Located in Castle Combe, often voted the most beautiful village in the UK
  • Michelin-starred dining at The Bybrook is a legitimate destination
  • The 14th-century building oozes genuine history (and potentially ghosts)

Stutt samantekt: A stunningly atmospheric time capsule that trades modern comforts like AC and a pool for 600-year-old beams and Michelin-starred food.

Farið yfir af @MilenaI felt like royalty waking up here. The morning mist over the gardens was magical, and having Castle Combe empty before the crowds arrived was a huge perk. Dinner at Bybrook was exquisite—definitely splurge on the tasting menu. Perfect for a romantic reset.

The hype

Guests are blown away by the fairytale architecture and grounds, but often surprised by the lack of modern climate control.

Reality check

The 'Main House' rooms are incredibly atmospheric but come with creaky floorboards and thin walls; light sleepers prefer the Mews.

  • You love history and character (uneven floors, exposed beams)
  • You are a golfer (Peter Alliss designed course on-site)
  • You are traveling with a dog (very pet-friendly Mews cottages)

Hreinlæti og viðhald

9.3
  • Housekeeping: Daily service is thorough; guests consistently praise the 'spotless' condition of rooms.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Excellent. Even in older rooms, bathrooms are modernized and kept mold-free.
  • Maintenance: Generally good, though historic buildings always have some peeling paint or creaky doors.
  • Linens & towels: High quality, plush towels and crisp linens.
  • Odors & scents: Fresh, no mustiness reported despite the age of the building.

Gott að vita

  • The gym ('The Loft') is located at the Golf Club, a short walk or buggy ride away, not in the main hotel.
  • Breakfast is served in the Michelin-starred Bybrook restaurant.
  • Parking is free and includes EV charging, but the lot is a short walk from the entrance.

Hvað á að pakka

  • Wellies/Hiking boots: The grounds and village walks can be muddy.
  • Earplugs: Essential for Main House stays due to creaky floors.
  • Portable fan: If visiting in July/August, the provided fans might not be enough.

Herbergis-Genie

Bestu val

  • Mews Cottages: For privacy, modern bathrooms, and dog-friendly access
  • The Grove: A specific Mews cottage with a massive bathroom and yellow roll-top tub
  • Doolittle: A renovated 'Plush' room in the Mews with modern styling

Herbergi til að forðast

  • Main House 'Cosy' rooms if you are tall (low beams)
  • Rooms directly above the bar/lounge in the Main House if you sleep early

Herbergisbeiðna-Genie – afrita og líma

I would prefer a room in the Mews Cottages for better soundproofing and modern amenities. If available, a renovated room like 'Doolittle' or 'The Grove' would be ideal. Please avoid rooms with low beams if possible.

Algengar spurningar og falin ábendingar

Allt sem þú vilt vita áður en þú bókar.

Is there a swimming pool?

No. There is no pool on the property. Do not be confused by the 'Manor House Country Hotel' in Enniskillen which has one.

Is there air conditioning?

No. None of the rooms have AC. They provide Dyson fans, but it gets warm in summer.

Is it dog friendly?

Yes, but only in the Mews Cottages. There is a fee of roughly £25-£40 per dog per stay.

Can I eat at the Michelin restaurant with kids?

Generally no. The Bybrook is fine dining and usually restricts young children in the evening; The Castle Inn is the family-friendly option.

Is the village crowded?

Extremely. Castle Combe is a major tourist magnet. Staying at the hotel gives you private grounds to escape the crowds.

Is the hotel haunted?

Rumor has it. Sir John Oldcastle is said to haunt the grounds, and guests have reported unexplained vibes, though 'Room 7' stories usually refer to a different Manor House hotel.

Innherja ábendingar

  • Grab a picnic box from 'The Little Picnic Shop' in the village and eat on the private hotel lawns to avoid the crowded public spots.

  • The 'Potting Shed' treatment room is literally a shed in the garden—charming, but not a full spa experience.

  • Book dinner at The Castle Inn (the hotel's pub) for at least one night; it has 2 AA Rosettes and is much more relaxed than Bybrook.

5 hlutir sem þú ættir að vita áður en þú ferð

  • 💡The walk from the car park to reception can be a hassle with heavy bags if you don't wait for the buggy.

  • 💡The 'gym' is actually at the golf club, so you have to leave the hotel building to work out.

  • 💡Cell signal is virtually non-existent in the village (though WiFi is good).

  • 💡The stairs in the Main House are uneven stone—treacherous in heels or socks.

  • 💡You might spot film crews; the village is a frequent set for movies like War Horse and Dr. Dolittle.
