Roomer

Amberley Castle

I-book ito kung You want to sleep in a legitimate 900-year-old fortress with a working portcullis, not just a hotel with a turret glued on.

Bakit Ito Minamahal ng Mga Tao

9.0203 review
  • Authentic medieval architecture (60ft curtain walls, suits of armor)
  • The 'Herstmonceux' room has private access to the castle battlements
  • Incredibly quiet, fairy-tale setting in the South Downs

Mabilis na Sumisid: It's a bucket-list time capsule that feels magical, but the 'historic charm' includes creaky floors, no AC, and a price tag that might make you weep.

Sinuri ng @nandafmsI was blown away by the details here—even the powder room felt like a queen's chambers. Walking past a suit of armor just to wash my hands was a surreal experience. The whole castle has this incredible, heavy historic feel that you just can't fake. Perfect for a romantic reset.

The hype

Guests are universally blown away by the grounds and the 'magical' feeling of entering through the portcullis, but value-for-money ratings often lag behind the location score.

Reality check

While the castle is stunning, some interiors feel 'tired' with worn carpets and scuffed paint, and the service doesn't always match the five-star price point.

  • You are a history buff who wants to touch 12th-century stone walls
  • You are planning a romantic proposal or anniversary
  • You want a quiet, rural escape with zero nightlife noise

Kalinisan & Pagpapanatili

8.5
  • Housekeeping: Generally good daily service, though some guests report missed dust in high corners or under antique furniture.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Mostly sparkling, but isolated reports of mold in shower sealant or limescale on taps (hard water area).
  • Maintenance: The biggest issue. Worn carpets, scuffed paint, and creaky floorboards are common complaints in a building this old.
  • Linens & towels: High quality, crisp white linens and fluffy towels.
  • Odors & scents: Usually fresh or woodsmoke (from fireplaces), but occasional 'old building' mustiness in damp weather.

Magandang Malaman

  • Dinner dress code is 'smart casual'—no shorts or trainers; jackets are preferred for men.
  • The portcullis is lowered at night (you can still get in, but it's a cool ritual to watch).
  • There is NO swimming pool or full spa facility (in-room treatments only).

Ano ang dapat dalhin

  • Walking shoes/Wellies for the 12 acres of grounds and South Downs trails
  • Smart dinner attire (jacket/dress)
  • A portable fan if visiting in July/August (just in case)

Genie ng Kuwarto

Mga Pinakamahusay na Pilihan

  • Herstmonceux Room (Premier Deluxe): The only room with private access to the castle battlements.
  • Pevensey Room: Features access to a 14th-century tower.
  • Lewes Room: Panoramic views of the dry moat and lakes.

Mga Kuwartong Dapat Iwasan

  • Ground floor 'Mews' rooms if you want the full 'castle' feel (they feel more like cottages).
  • Rooms with open-plan bathrooms if you value privacy (ask specifically for a room with a bathroom door).

Room Request Genie – kopyahin at i-paste

I am booking for a special occasion and would love to request the 'Herstmonceux' or 'Pevensey' room for the unique historic features. Please also ensure we are assigned a room with a fully enclosed bathroom (with a door), not an open-plan layout.

FAQ & Mga Nakatagong Tip

Lahat ng kailangan mong malaman bago ka magbook.

Is there air conditioning?

No. Due to the Grade I listed status of the building, there is no AC. Fans are provided, but it gets warm in summer.

Is it haunted?

Legend says yes. 'Emily', a servant girl ghost, is said to haunt the Herstmonceux room and battlements.

Is there a pool?

No. There is a tennis court, croquet lawn, and putting course, but no swimming pool.

Can I bring my dog?

No. Amberley Castle has a strict no-pets policy (service dogs only).

Is there EV charging?

Limited. There is one charging point (Pod Point) at the nearby Amberley Museum and potentially a staff socket (inquire in advance).

Is it suitable for kids?

Technically yes, but not recommended. There are no specific kids' facilities (pool/club) and the atmosphere is very quiet and adult-focused.

Mga Insider Tips

  • Ask to see the 'Oubliette' (dungeon) near the Great Room—it's a genuine medieval feature.

  • Walk to the 'Black Horse' pub in Amberley village for a more casual (and cheaper) meal than the castle restaurant.

  • The 'Herstmonceux' room has a secret door that leads directly onto the ramparts.

5 bagay na dapat mong malaman bago ka umalis

  • 💡The 'optional' service charge is aggressive and added to almost everything.

  • 💡The bathrooms in some 'luxury' rooms are surprisingly small due to medieval plumbing constraints.

  • 💡You might hear your neighbors walking above you—wooden floors are 900 years old in spirit (and sound).

  • 💡The 'dry moat' is actually a lovely garden walk, not a muddy ditch.

  • 💡Breakfast service can be chaotic when the hotel is full; go early (8am) to avoid the wait.
