Kalundewa Retreat

$185-450/ yö

Varaa tämä, jos You want to sleep inside a living nature documentary where peacocks are your alarm clock and the architecture disappears into the paddy fields.

Miksi ihmiset rakastuvat sitä

  • Architecture that vanishes into the landscape (glass walls, stilts)
  • Incredible wildlife spotting from your bed (hornbills, monkeys, peacocks)
  • Total seclusion in a 100-acre eco-reserve

Pikakatsaus: A stunning architectural concept in a breathtaking location that is currently struggling with maintenance issues and nature fighting back (bugs, mold, wear).

Arvioinut @themiddleagewandererI stayed in this glass chalet at Kalundewa Retreat and it was unreal. Waking up surrounded by the lake and trees felt like living in a nature documentary. The private pool deck was my favorite spot for morning coffee. Truly the most peaceful place I've ever been.

The hype

Guests are blown away by the initial 'wow' factor of the location and design but often leave disappointed by the lack of upkeep and deep cleaning.

Reality check

The photos look pristine, but the reality involves stained glass, worn linens, and a bathroom that fights a losing battle against the jungle humidity.

  • You are a hardcore birdwatcher or nature photographer
  • You prefer silence and isolation over nightlife
  • You can handle a few bugs and lizards in exchange for a view

Siisteys ja kunnossapito

5.5
  • Housekeeping: Inconsistent. Daily service happens, but deep cleaning (corners, under beds) is frequently missed.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Major weak point. Recurring complaints of black mold in grout, water stains on glass, and tired fixtures.
  • Maintenance: Struggling. Peeling paint, rotting timber decks, and broken jacuzzi jets are common complaints.
  • Linens & towels: Average. Clean but often feel worn or 'damp' due to the high humidity environment.
  • Odors & scents: Generally fresh air, but some rooms have a lingering musty/mildew smell due to the proximity to water.

Ennen kuin varaat

Hyvä tietää

  • The hotel is in the 'Dry Zone' but surrounded by water, meaning mosquitoes are intense at dusk.
  • Alcohol is served (wine/beer/cocktails), but selection is limited.
  • Driver accommodation is available, which is crucial if you are touring Sri Lanka with a private driver.

Mitä pakata

  • High-strength DEET insect repellent (the natural stuff won't cut it)
  • Binoculars for the porch (the birdlife is world-class)
  • Earplugs if you are a light sleeper (nature is noisy)

Huone Genie

Parhaat valinnot

  • Kumbuk Chalet: Elevated on stilts, private plunge pool, best balance of views and privacy.
  • Bakmee Chalet (Lower): Good for families, has a plunge pool (Upper unit does not).

Huoneet, joita kannattaa välttää

  • Nil Manel Floating Villa: Sounds romantic, but the raft access is a hassle and it feels abandoned/musty according to recent guests.
  • Standard Deluxe Rooms: Lack the 'wow' factor of the chalets; you come here for the standalone villas.

I am booking a stay for [Month]. Please ensure we are assigned the Kumbuk Chalet if available. We are very sensitive to mold and cleanliness, so please request a deep clean of the blinds and bathroom grout prior to our arrival.

FAQ & Piilotut vinkit

Kaikki mitä haluat todella tietää ennen varaamista.

Is there a pool?

Yes, a main swimming pool overlooking the paddy fields, plus private plunge pools in specific chalets (Kumbuk, Bakmee Lower, etc.).

Can I walk to restaurants?

No. You are 7km from Dambulla town down a dirt road. You will eat at the hotel or need a car.

Is it suitable for kids?

Technically yes, but not ideal. Lots of open water, steep drops from walkways, and nothing to do but look at nature.

Is there WiFi?

Yes, free WiFi in public areas and rooms, but it can be spotty due to the remote location.

Do they serve alcohol?

Yes, there is a bar and wine list, though some older reviews claim otherwise (likely referring to Poya days).

Are there hidden fees?

Expect the standard Sri Lankan service charge (10%) and government taxes (SSCL/VAT ~18%) to be added to your bill if not prepaid.

Sisäpiirin vinkit

  • Ask for a table at the 'Kamatha' (threshing floor) for a private dinner setting under the stars.

  • The hotel has its own organic garden; ask the chef to prepare a curry using whatever was harvested that morning.

  • Don't skip the sunrise; the mist rolling off the mountains over the paddy fields is the single best part of the stay.

5 asiaa, jotka sinun pitää tietää ennen matkaasi

  • 💡The 'raft' to the floating villa is often dirty and requires waiting for staff to pulley you across.

  • 💡Monkeys can and will enter your room if you leave the balcony door cracked even an inch.

  • 💡The glass walls are amazing for views but terrible for privacy; you might feel exposed to gardeners working in the paddy fields.

  • 💡The access road is a bumpy dirt track that tuk-tuks struggle with in the rain.

  • 💡Hot water can be inconsistent in the standalone chalets due to solar heating lags.
