Roomer

Stowaway Kangaroo Island

$600-750/ night

Book this if You want to disappear with your partner into a luxury bunker where the only neighbors are kangaroos and the only noise is the crackling fire.

Why People Love It

9.821 reviews
  • Total isolation with zero visibility of other guests
  • Wildlife (kangaroos, wallabies) grazing right in front of your deck at dusk
  • Private hot tubs and saunas in every single villa

Quick Take: This is high-end self-catering, not a full-service hotel—you are paying for the privacy and the hardware, not for someone to peel your grapes.

Reviewed by @rachelxwattsI stayed at The Snug and honestly, watching kangaroos hop past while I soaked in the tub was a core memory. The fireplace makes it so cozy at night, and sipping local red wine by the fire was perfection. It’s the ultimate couple's hideaway.

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

The ultimate honeymoon spot where the photos actually match the reality of the views and privacy.

Reality check

The drive to dinner or a supermarket is long and dark on unsealed roads, so if you don't plan ahead with food, you'll be eating vending machine snacks.

  • You are comfortable driving on gravel roads
  • You want to be naked in a hot tub without worrying about neighbors
  • You prefer cooking a steak on the BBQ over dressing up for a restaurant

Cleanliness & Maintenance

9.6
  • Housekeeping: Immaculate upon arrival. No daily intrusion, which guests prefer.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Spotless. High-end grout work, freestanding tubs are pristine.
  • Maintenance: Like new. The owners (Carly & Adam) are obsessive about upkeep.
  • Linens & towels: Luxury hotel grade. Fluffy robes and crisp high-thread-count sheets.
  • Odors & scents: Smells like fresh eucalyptus and wood smoke (if you light the fire).

Before you book

Good to know

  • The nearest supermarket (Kingscote) is a 30-40 minute drive; stock up before you arrive
  • Check-in is contactless; you'll get a code
  • There is no daily housekeeping for stays under 5 nights (privacy is the priority)

What to pack

  • Groceries for your entire stay (seriously)
  • Slip-on shoes for moving between the sauna, hot tub, and deck
  • Warm layers for the evenings, even in summer

Room Genie

Best picks

  • The Hide or The Snug (Newer builds from 2022, feature outdoor showers and powder rooms)
  • The Nest (Best panoramic views of the conservation park)

Rooms to avoid

  • None are 'bad', but The Sleepy Hollow is slightly more enclosed/sheltered if you prefer coziness over vast expansive views

We would love to book 'The Hide' or 'The Snug' to take advantage of the outdoor shower and newer layout, but would be happy with 'The Nest' for those panoramic views.

FAQ & Hidden tips

Everything you actually want to know before you book.

Is there a restaurant on site?

No. They offer pre-ordered food hampers (BBQ packs, breakfast provisions) but there is no cooked-to-order dining.

Is the wifi actually good?

Yes, they now offer complimentary unlimited Starlink/high-speed wifi (an upgrade from their old 1GB cap).

Can I bring my dog?

No. The property borders Lathami Conservation Park, so domestic pets are strictly prohibited to protect wildlife.

Do I need a 4WD?

Not strictly necessary, but highly recommended. The driveway and surrounding roads are unsealed gravel.

Is there a pool?

No shared pool, but every single villa has its own private outdoor hot tub.

Can I charge my EV there?

No on-site chargers. You'll need to charge at Kingscote, Penneshaw, or the airport before heading out.

Insider Tips

  • The 'secret' tunnel to Stokes Bay Beach is a 5-minute drive away—go at low tide for the best rock pool swimming.

  • Pre-order the 'Gastronomo' dining experience if it's running (seasonal) for a unique local meal.

  • Leftover whiting scraps? The local pelicans at the Kingscote wharf (30 mins away) are fed daily at 5pm.

5 things to know before you go

  • 💡The kangaroos aren't just 'nearby'—they will literally stare at you while you're in the hot tub.

  • 💡The 'pool' listed on some booking sites is just your private hot tub; don't bring pool floats.

  • 💡You might spot the rare Glossy Black Cockatoo right from your deck (the property is a conservation haven for them).

  • 💡The road to the hotel is gravel and can be washboard-bumpy; drive slow if you have a small rental car.

  • 💡There are no blinds on some of the main view windows—bring an eye mask if you're sensitive to moonlight or early sun.
