Why People Love It

9.11092 reviews
  • 20-minute speedboat transfer (no long waits for seaplanes)
  • Massive turquoise lagoon perfect for safe swimming and water sports
  • Renovated 'Sunset Beach Pool Villas' feel like a 5-star upgrade

Quick Take: It’s a bustling holiday village, not a deserted island castaway fantasy—expect buffet lines, not butler whispers.

Reviewed by @canada_hacksMy partner and I stayed in this beach villa and it was a dream. Having our own private pool surrounded by all that greenery gave us total privacy. It felt like our own little world, perfect for disconnecting.

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

The staff are incredible and the lagoon is stunning, but the food can get repetitive and the resort feels crowded at capacity.

Reality check

The 'Water Villas' look great in photos but suffer from shallow water/dead coral at low tide and thin walls.

  • You are traveling with active kids who need constant entertainment
  • You hate the idea of a 45-minute seaplane flight after a long haul
  • You prefer a social vibe with pool parties and karaoke over total silence

Cleanliness & Maintenance

8.5
  • Housekeeping: Twice daily service is standard. Generally thorough, but sand is a constant battle.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Renovated villas are spotless. Older Beach Villas have complaints of stained grout and worn tubs.
  • Maintenance: Public areas are pristine. Older rooms show salt-air wear (rust on hinges, peeling varnish).
  • Linens & towels: Clean and crisp in upgraded rooms; occasionally reported as 'grey' or worn in standard rooms.
  • Odors & scents: Lobby smells of fresh lemongrass. Older rooms can have a faint musty/damp smell due to humidity.

  • Seaplanes passing overhead (resort is in the flight path)
  • Thin walls in semi-detached Water Villas (can hear neighbors)
  • Boat engine noise near the arrival jetty

Before you book

Good to know

  • Transfer is via speedboat ($185/adult roundtrip), not seaplane.
  • Half Board plans usually do NOT include water at dinner (chargeable).
  • Gala dinners for Xmas ($260) and NYE ($350) are mandatory charges.

What to pack

  • Strong mosquito repellent (lush vegetation = bugs)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen (expensive at the resort shop)
  • US Dollar cash for tips (preferred over local currency)

Room Genie

Best picks

  • Sunset Beach Pool Villa (Renovated, modern, private pool, best sunset views)
  • Deluxe Beach Pool Villa (Freshly updated, great beach access)

Rooms to avoid

  • Standard Beach Villas (Old tile floors, dated bathrooms, ant complaints)
  • Water Villas near the main jetty (Noise from boats and restaurant)

Room Request Genie – copy & paste

Request a 'Sunset Beach Pool Villa' on the side of the island facing away from Male for better swimming depth and less boat traffic noise.

FAQ & Hidden tips

Everything you actually want to know before you book.

Is the All-Inclusive plan worth it?

Debatable. It locks you into the buffet. If you're not a heavy drinker, Full Board plus paying for a la carte dinners might be better quality.

Can I snorkel from my room?

Not easily. The water villas are in a shallow lagoon with dead coral. You need to swim out to the drop-off or take a boat excursion.

Is the wifi good enough for work?

Yes, in the rooms it's solid (10-20 Mbps). It drops off significantly on the beach and in some public areas.

How much is the deposit?

They typically block ~$200-300 per room per stay for incidentals upon check-in.

Are there hidden taxes?

Yes. 10% Service Charge + 16% GST on everything. Plus the new $12/person/night Green Tax.

Is the water drinkable?

Tap water is desalinated but not for drinking. You get complimentary glass bottled water in the room daily.

Insider Tips

  • The 'Lagoon Restaurant' is quieter than the main 'Bageecha' buffet but has less variety—go there for a peaceful breakfast.

  • Book the 'Sandbar Picnic' excursion early; it sells out and is the best photo op of the trip.

  • Happy Hour at the main bar often has 2-for-1 cocktails—check the daily board.

5 things to know before you go

  • 💡The 'City Tax' mentioned online is actually the Maldives Green Tax, which doubled to $12/night in 2025.

  • 💡You can see the skyline of Male and other islands from the beach—it's not endless open ocean.

  • 💡The 'Gym' is surprisingly well-equipped but can get stuffy as the AC struggles in midday heat.

  • 💡There is a 'shark feeding' event at night at the jetty which attracts huge nurse sharks—cool but crowded.

  • 💡The standard Beach Villas have outdoor bathrooms that are magnets for ants and geckos.
