Why People Love It

8.31749 reviews
  • Unbeatable location right on the Esplanade and next to the marina
  • Spacious rooms with large balconies and gorgeous water views
  • Excellent buffet breakfast with a fresh juice station

Quick Take: It's a classic 1980s property that boasts an unbeatable location and great views, but the dated rooms, peeling paint, and hit-or-miss housekeeping reveal its age.

Reviewed by @ebh4000473I couldn't get enough of the view from my balcony at the Hilton Cairns. Waking up to the swaying palm trees, the calm bay, and those lush mountains was exactly the peaceful escape I needed. Having my morning coffee out there was absolute perfection.

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

The waterfront location and friendly staff are fantastic, but the property feels tired and is in desperate need of a renovation.

Reality check

You're paying for the prime location and views, not 5-star modern luxury—expect older bathrooms and occasional cleanliness oversights.

  • You are taking early morning Great Barrier Reef tours from the nearby terminal
  • You love sitting on a balcony watching the boats and sunset over the water
  • You want to be within walking distance of Cairns' best restaurants and the Esplanade Lagoon

Cleanliness & Maintenance

6
  • Housekeeping: Hit or miss. Some guests report spotless rooms, while others complain about missed spots, dirty floors upon arrival, and unrefilled amenities.
  • Bathroom hygiene: A major pain point. Multiple reports of moldy grout, stained bath mats, and hair left in drains.
  • Maintenance: Showing its age. Complaints include peeling paint, scratched wood veneer, noisy AC units, and worn-out mattresses.
  • Linens & towels: Generally clean, but some reports of stained or worn towels and stiff, aging beds.
  • Odors & scents: Several guests reported a noticeable musty or damp smell in the rooms and hallways, typical of older tropical buildings.

Insider Tips

  • Book a room with Executive Lounge access—the sunset views over the estuary with complimentary evening drinks are highly rated.

  • If you don't want to pay $30 for parking, look for 8-hour capped street parking nearby on Wharf or Hartley Street.

  • Grab a casual lunch at Mondo on the Waterfront, the hotel's alfresco restaurant right on Trinity Inlet.

5 things to know before you go

  • 💡The hotel was built in 1987 and still retains a lot of that 80s architectural DNA, including the massive indoor tropical atrium.

  • 💡The local birdlife in the surrounding trees is incredibly loud at dawn and dusk.

  • 💡The bathrooms lack dual sinks and have limited counter space despite the large overall room size.

  • 💡There's a hidden general store in the lobby selling wine and beer at reasonable pub prices.

  • 💡The pool area is surrounded by lush greenery but loses the sun earlier in the day compared to the Esplanade Lagoon.
