Le Meridien Ile Maurice

Book this if You want a massive, full-service resort experience on the sunset coast and are willing to pay extra for the adults-only 'Nirvana' wing to escape the family chaos.

Why People Love It

8.7631 reviews
  • The adults-only Nirvana wing offers a genuine oasis with its own infinity pool and perks
  • Kumin restaurant serves some of the best Indian cuisine on the island
  • West coast location guarantees spectacular sunsets every evening

Quick Take: A tale of two hotels: a serene, modern escape in the Nirvana wing, and a sometimes chaotic, hit-or-miss mass-market resort everywhere else.

Reviewed by @RubyI was blown away by the design here. Walking through the lobby and seeing that water feature lead straight into the Indian Ocean was a core memory. It’s easily the most photogenic resort I've visited in Mauritius—perfect if you love symmetry.

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

Travelers love the modern 2022 renovation and the Indian food, but many feel the service is reactive rather than proactive.

Reality check

Inconsistency is the enemy here—some guests get spotless suites, others report ants in the bed and moldy bathrooms.

  • You book the Nirvana wing for a couples' retreat
  • You love Indian food (Kumin is a highlight)
  • You want a modern room aesthetic (creams, blues, minimalist)

Cleanliness & Maintenance

6.5
  • Housekeeping: Inconsistent. Many reports of missed spots, stained sheets, and reactive service.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Major concern area. Recent reviews cite sewage smells and mold in ground floor showers.
  • Maintenance: Generally good post-2022 renovation, but some rooms already showing wear (peeling paint, broken AC).
  • Linens & towels: Standard hotel quality, but check for stains upon arrival.
  • Odors & scents: Lobby smells fresh; some guest rooms have reported musty/damp or sewage odors.

Before you book

Good to know

  • There is a city tax of approx. EUR 3 per person/night payable at check-in
  • Dinner dress codes are enforced (long trousers for men)
  • The 'Nirvana' pool is strictly for guests of that wing; they check room numbers

What to pack

  • Heavy-duty swim shoes (reef is sharp)
  • Bug spray (mosquitoes can be intense at dusk)
  • European power adapter (Type C/E)

Room Genie

Best picks

  • Nirvana Romantic Allure (1st floor) for ocean views and no kids
  • Ocean Sky Junior Suite (2nd floor) for the best sunset views in the main wing

Rooms to avoid

  • Ground floor 'Beach Bliss' rooms if you fear bugs or lack of privacy
  • Rooms directly facing the main pool if you want to nap during the day

Room Request Genie – copy & paste

I am requesting a room on the 2nd floor (Ocean Sky category or similar) to ensure privacy and minimize noise. Please ensure the room is away from the main pool/jetty area. If possible, I would appreciate a room that has been recently deep-cleaned due to allergy concerns.

FAQ & Hidden tips

Everything you actually want to know before you book.

Is the beach swimmable?

Barely. It is very rocky and shallow with coral. You need swim shoes. Better swimming is at Trou aux Biches, a short drive away.

Is the Nirvana wing worth the extra cost?

100% yes. You get a private reception, private pool, sunset cocktails, and a much quieter breakfast experience.

Does the hotel have a heated pool?

The Nirvana plunge pools can be heated in winter, but the main pools are generally unheated and can be chilly in July/August.

How far is the airport?

About 60km, which takes 60-75 minutes by taxi depending on traffic.

Are there hidden fees?

Just the city tax (~€3/pp/night). No mandatory 'resort fee' on top of the rate, but check your booking terms.

Is the food good?

Better than average for an all-inclusive. Kumin (Indian) is excellent; the main buffet (Nomad) is decent but repetitive.

Insider Tips

  • The 'Snow Room' in the spa is a legitimate gimmick that actually feels amazing after a sauna session.

  • You can walk to 'Cabane du Pecheur' for a much cheaper, more authentic seafood lunch than the hotel offers.

  • Nirvana guests get free sunset cocktails—don't miss this daily ritual.

5 things to know before you go

  • 💡The 'Beachfront' rooms often look at a pool that looks at the beach, not directly at the sand.

  • 💡There are no elevators in many blocks; you will be walking up stairs.

  • 💡Stray dogs and cats are common on the beach and sometimes near the open-air dining areas.

  • 💡The 'plunged coffee' at breakfast is often better than the machine espresso.

  • 💡You might smell burning sugar cane from the fields inland during harvest season.
