Balgownie Estate Vineyard Resort & Spa

Book this if You want to wake up to hot air balloons floating over Pinot Noir vines without leaving your balcony.

Why People Love It

8.41461 reviews
  • Direct access to the cellar door and tasting deck
  • Sweeping vineyard views from almost every room
  • On-site Endota Spa for serious pampering

Quick Take: A solid 4-star vineyard hotel that calls itself a 5-star resort; come for the wine and views, but expect some dated corners and thin walls.

Reviewed by @laikacharlesI needed a break from the city, and this spot in Yarra Glen was perfect. We grabbed some pizza, opened a bottle of red, and just sat on the balcony watching the sun go down over the vines. The spa bath later was the cherry on top. Highly recommend for a reset.

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

Travelers adore the location and the sunrise balloon views, but often feel the rooms are slightly tired for the price point.

Reality check

Service can be hit-or-miss—some report feeling invisible compared to wedding guests or locals dining in.

  • You plan to drink enough estate Shiraz to not mind a walk to your room
  • You are attending a wedding onsite
  • You want a self-contained suite with a kitchenette

Cleanliness & Maintenance

8.5
  • Housekeeping: Generally reliable daily service, though some guests report missed dusting on high shelves.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Good. Walk-in showers are clean, though grout in older units can show age.
  • Maintenance: The biggest issue is the HVAC system age/noise. Paint and carpets are generally well-kept.
  • Linens & towels: Standard hotel quality—crisp white sheets, decent towel thickness. No luxury thread-count bragging here.
  • Odors & scents: Neutral to fresh. One guest noted a 'calming green' vibe, no persistent musty smells reported recently.

Before you book

Good to know

  • Reception is 24 hours, but the cellar door closes early (5pm usually)
  • A $100 security bond is taken at check-in
  • Breakfast is NOT included in all rates; it's ~$39 AUD pp if paid separately

What to pack

  • Earplugs (essential for the heating noise)
  • Slip-on shoes for the walk between the pool/spa and your room
  • Layers (Yarra Valley gets surprisingly cold at night)

Room Genie

Best picks

  • Premier Corner Suite (dual aspect views and a deep soaking tub)
  • Ground floor Garden Terrace rooms (if you want to avoid stairs)

Rooms to avoid

  • Standard Queen rooms near the function center on weekends (noise risk)
  • Upper floor suites if you have heavy luggage (no elevator)

Room Request Genie – copy & paste

I am a light sleeper. Please assign a room as far as possible from the wedding function center and HVAC plant rooms. If available, a top-floor corner unit would be appreciated, but only if it does not adjoin a high-traffic stairwell.

FAQ & Hidden tips

Everything you actually want to know before you book.

Is there an elevator?

No. If you book an upper-floor suite, you must walk up stairs.

Is the pool warm?

Yes, it is a heated indoor pool, though guests describe it as 'small'—more for a dip than laps.

Can I charge my EV there?

No onsite chargers. The nearest public charger is at Yarra Glen Memorial Hall on Bell Street.

Is it adults-only?

No, children are welcome, but the vibe is definitely adult-centric (wine and spa).

How far is the winery from the rooms?

It's all on one estate, but depending on your block, it can be a 2-5 minute outdoor walk to the restaurant/reception.

What happened to Rae's Restaurant?

It burned down in 2020. The new onsite dining venue is '1309 at Balgownie'.
