South Coast Winery Resort And Spa

$200-350/ night

Book this if You want the full 'sleeping in the vineyard' experience with a glass of Syrah in hand, and you don't mind if the decor is a little more 2005 than 2025.

Why People Love It

8.8410 reviews
  • Villas are set directly amongst the vines for genuine privacy
  • Heated saltwater pool is a year-round draw
  • GrapeSeed Spa is legitimately world-class and often the highlight of the stay

Quick Take: A charming, Tuscan-inspired heavyweight that rests on its laurels—the grounds are stunning, but the rooms are starting to show their age.

Reviewed by @Michaela_romanosmithI spent the most relaxing weekend at South Coast Winery. Waking up in a private villa surrounded by vines was magical, but the in-room jacuzzi and fireplace stole the show. If you need a romantic reset with amazing food and wine, this is the spot. I didn't want to leave.

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

Travelers love the 'Tuscan village' vibe and the convenience of walking to tastings, but frequently mention the furniture and carpets feel tired.

Reality check

The 'villa' experience is romantic until you notice the ripped carpet or the plumbing that needs a jiggle—maintenance hasn't quite kept pace with the prices.

  • You are traveling with a dog (the villas are perfect for pets)
  • You want a self-contained resort where you can drink, eat, and sleep without driving
  • You prioritize a great pool and spa over modern room aesthetics

Cleanliness & Maintenance

8.5
  • Housekeeping: Daily service is standard, but efficiency drops during peak wedding weekends.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Generally sparkling, though some guests report loose faucets or slow drains in older villas.
  • Maintenance: The weak link. Expect worn carpets, scuffed furniture, or peeling paint on patio railings.
  • Linens & towels: Towels are plentiful and decent quality; sheets are standard hotel grade, nothing ultra-luxe.
  • Odors & scents: Lobby smells of wine and flowers; some older villas have a faint 'vintage' (musty) smell.

Sleepability™

MODERATE

  • Wedding receptions (music until 10pm)
  • Thin walls between connecting villas
  • Housekeeping carts on walkways early morning

Before you book

Good to know

  • Breakfast is NOT included; expect to pay ~$20-35 per person at The Vineyard Rose
  • The resort fee covers self-parking, so no surprise garage costs
  • You get a bottle of wine (or tasting vouchers) at check-in—ask for it if they forget

What to pack

  • Swimsuit for the heated saltwater pool (open year-round)
  • Earplugs if you're staying on a Saturday night during wedding season
  • Walking shoes—the property is large and the walk from villas to the lobby can be long

Room Genie

Best picks

  • Deluxe King Villa (stand-alone units offer the most privacy)
  • Tower Suites (if you want easy access to the pool/lobby and don't mind hallway noise)

Rooms to avoid

  • Ground floor Tower rooms near the lobby (high foot traffic)
  • Villas directly adjacent to the event lawns if a wedding is scheduled

Room Request Genie – copy & paste

I would love to request a Deluxe King Villa as far from the main event lawns as possible for quiet. If in the Tower, a top-floor suite facing the vineyards (not the parking lot) would be ideal.

Insider Tips

  • Ask for a villa in the 300 block for better vineyard views and less road noise.

  • The 'Carter Estate' shuttle is free—use it to visit the sister property for a quieter tasting experience.

  • Buy a bottle of wine at the tasting room to drink on your patio; it's cheaper than ordering room service wine.

5 things to know before you go

  • 💡The 'faux fireplaces' in the rooms are cozy but don't put out much actual heat.

  • 💡Wi-Fi in the far villas can be practically non-existent.

  • 💡The 'soaking tubs' are huge but can take 20 minutes to fill—start the water early.

  • 💡You might spot hot air balloons landing nearby in the early morning—great photo op from your patio.

  • 💡The restaurant, The Vineyard Rose, is one of the few in wine country serving full breakfast daily.
