Why People Love It

7.9634 reviews
  • Floor-to-ceiling windows in 'Cool Corner' rooms
  • Walking distance to Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola
  • Local Motives restaurant serves solid shrimp and grits

Quick Take: A fading party hotel currently gutted by renovations that feels more like a dusty construction site than a luxury W.

Reviewed by @jcastrotravelsI stayed at the W Atlanta Downtown and the rooftop pool scene was the highlight of my trip. The views from my room were incredible, and being right in the city center made exploring so easy. Definitely the spot for a stylish city break.

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

Great location for tourists, but the current renovation mess makes it a 'stay away' for most.

Reality check

Guests are furious about paying full price for a hotel with no amenities, wake-up calls by jackhammer, and dust coating the furniture.

  • You have noise-canceling headphones glued to your ears
  • You need to be across the street from the Civic Center
  • You are hunting for a Marriott elite night credit at a discount

Cleanliness & Maintenance

4
  • Housekeeping: Inconsistent. Many reports of missed days and 'dust everywhere' due to construction.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Grout is often described as 'grimy' or 'stained'.
  • Maintenance: Poor. Peeling paint, broken elevators, and general wear-and-tear are common complaints.
  • Linens & towels: Generally acceptable, though some reports of worn edges.
  • Odors & scents: Construction dust and stale air are the current dominant scents.

  • Heavy drilling/construction noise (mornings)
  • Hallway noise due to thin doors
  • Street noise on lower floors

Before you book

Good to know

  • Valet is the only onsite parking option and costs ~$55-65/night
  • The hotel is rebranding to a JW Marriott, so W signage/vibe is fading
  • Breakfast at Local Motives is NOT free (approx. $20-30/person)

What to pack

  • Earplugs (essential for the morning drilling)
  • Slippers (carpets are reported as worn/dusty)
  • Your own steamer (irons are hit or miss)

Room Genie

Best picks

  • Cool Corner Room (ends in '09' usually) for the best dual-aspect city views
  • Studio Suites for extra floor space if you're stuck inside

Rooms to avoid

  • Rooms near the elevators (noisy)
  • Lower floors facing the highway/street
  • Any room on a floor currently being worked on (ask at check-in)

I am aware of the renovations. Please assign a room on the highest possible floor, away from the active construction zone, preferably a Cool Corner unit facing the city, not the highway.

FAQ & Hidden tips

Everything you actually want to know before you book.

Is the pool open?

Likely not. It's a seasonal outdoor pool (May-Sept) and renovations may keep it closed longer.

Does the hotel have a free shuttle?

No, but it's walkable to major attractions like the Aquarium and Centennial Park.

Is there a resort fee?

No explicit 'resort fee' is listed, but 'taxes and fees' are high, and parking is steep.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, but it's pricey: ~$100 non-refundable fee plus ~$25 per night.

Is breakfast included?

No, unless you have specific Marriott Bonvoy status or booked a package. Expect to pay ~$25.

When will renovations finish?

Scheduled for late March 2026, but these things often run over. Check before booking for April.

Insider Tips

  • Walk 5 mins to 'Cafe Fwi' in AmericasMart for better/cheaper coffee than the hotel.

  • The 'Red Phone Booth' speakeasy is nearby; ask the concierge for the current entry code.

  • Don't pay for hotel water; there's a CVS pharmacy just a block away for snacks and drinks.

5 things to know before you go

  • 💡The 'W' vibe is dead; it's in a weird limbo state before becoming a JW Marriott.

  • 💡Elevators are slow and often dirty due to contractor use.

  • 💡The 'resort' amenities (spa/pool) are virtually non-existent during this work phase.

  • 💡You can hear your neighbors' conversations clearly through the connecting doors.

  • 💡The location is great for tourists but a bit of a food desert for late-night eats.
