Book this if You want the 'original' Maldives experience—quiet, no kids under 8, and a house reef you can snorkel from your deck.

Why People Love It

9.6157 reviews
  • World-class house reef accessible directly from the beach or water villas
  • 25-minute speedboat transfer (no seaplane hassle or wait times)
  • Intimate, grown-up vibe with no motorized water sports to ruin the silence

Quick Take: It’s an aging classic that trades modern glitz for authentic charm, but the new tax hikes and nearby dredging plumes are starting to chip away at the perfection.

Reviewed by @ptb.aeAfter a long flight, the 25-minute speedboat ride was a lifesaver. My Water Villa felt completely isolated—just me and the ocean. Waking up to that turquoise view and jumping straight in from the deck was the absolute highlight of my stay.

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

Travelers adore the 'Mr. & Mrs. Friday' butler service and the insane proximity of the reef, often calling it a 'second home'.

Reality check

Some recent guests noted the water clarity isn't what it used to be due to nearby dredging, and the 'continental' breakfast inclusion is basic compared to competitors.

  • You prioritize snorkeling over a private pool
  • You hate long travel days (speedboat is quick)
  • You want a 'Robinson Crusoe' vibe rather than a concrete jungle

Cleanliness & Maintenance

9.7
  • Housekeeping: Impeccable twice-daily service. Turn-down service includes nice touches like essential oils.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Spotless. Outdoor showers are well-maintained, though leaves fall in naturally.
  • Maintenance: Excellent for a 50-year-old resort. Wood is polished, thatch is fresh. Minor wear on older decks.
  • Linens & towels: High-quality, fluffy, and replaced instantly if sandy.
  • Odors & scents: Fresh sea breeze and lemongrass oil in the lobby. No musty smells reported.

What to pack

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (mandatory for the ecosystem)
  • Rash guard for snorkeling (you will be in the water for hours)
  • Dressy casual clothes for The Lighthouse restaurant (no swimwear allowed)

Room Genie

Best picks

  • Water Pool Villas 311-325 for the best sunset views and direct reef access
  • Baros Pool Villas 209-212 for beach privacy and shade

Rooms to avoid

  • Villas near the arrival jetty (can hear boat engines)
  • Water Villas facing the 'sunrise' side if you want afternoon sun on your deck

Room Request Genie – copy & paste

I am requesting a Sunset Water Pool Villa in the 311-325 range. Please avoid any villa near the arrival jetty or generator. We prefer a room with an unobstructed view of the horizon, away from the breakwall.

FAQ & Hidden tips

Everything you actually want to know before you book.

Is the transfer by seaplane or speedboat?

Speedboat only. It takes 25 minutes from Male airport and runs 24/7, so no waiting for seaplanes.

Are kids allowed?

Only children aged 8 and above. There are no kids' clubs or specific activities for them.

Is the house reef actually good?

Yes, it's one of the best in North Male Atoll. You can see sharks, turtles, and rays just 15 meters from the shore.

Do I need an all-inclusive package?

Not necessarily. The 'Baros Delight' package is comprehensive, but Half Board is often enough as breakfast is huge and you might skip lunch.

Is there a lot of construction noise?

On the island? No. But distant dredging from Male's expansion can sometimes be seen or affect water clarity.

How much is dinner if I don't have a meal plan?

Expensive. Expect $120-$150 per person for a set menu at The Lighthouse, plus taxes and drinks.

Insider Tips

  • Book a 'Piano Deck' dinner for the ultimate private experience—it's a standalone platform in the lagoon.

  • Join the free marine biologist presentation at the Palm Garden; they give insider tips on where to spot turtles that day.

  • The 'Nooma' traditional dhoni boat cruise is cheaper and more romantic than the modern yacht charter.

5 things to know before you go

  • 💡The 'continental' breakfast included in some rates is just cold items; hot dishes cost extra.

  • 💡Mosquitoes can be an issue in the lush interior paths despite fogging—bring spray.

  • 💡The 'sand' in some beach villas is actually crushed coral, so bring flip-flops.

  • 💡You can hear the call to prayer from nearby local islands if the wind is right (adds to the atmosphere, but surprising to some).

  • 💡The 'villa host' is shared, not a dedicated private butler like at St. Regis.
