Shangri-La Bangkok

$160-280/ night

Book this if You want the classic 'Grand Dame' Bangkok riverside experience with a resort vibe and don't mind if the decor feels a decade or two behind.

Why People Love It

8.71542 reviews
  • Unbeatable riverside location right next to Saphan Taksin BTS and the central pier
  • The Krungthep Wing feels like a private sanctuary within a massive city hotel
  • Breakfast at NEXT2 Café is widely considered one of the best and biggest buffets in Bangkok

Quick Take: It’s a 1986 classic that wears its age like a badge of honor—expect impeccable service and marble everywhere, but also carpeted rooms and bathrooms that miss the modern mark.

Reviewed by @thomas.friasI stayed in this riverfront suite and the private terrace completely blew me away. It's incredibly rare to find this much outdoor space in the city. The classic decor feels so regal, and watching the river traffic from my desk made working remotely a dream.

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

Travelers adore the pool, the river views, and the breakfast, but consistently note that the rooms feel 'tired' and 'dated' compared to newer luxury rivals.

Reality check

You are paying for the river access and the service, not for modern design. If you need USB-C ports by the bed and a rainfall shower, this isn't it.

  • You love a massive hotel breakfast spread
  • You want easy access to the river boats and the Skytrain without walking far
  • You appreciate old-school, bow-tie service and lobby orchestras

Cleanliness & Maintenance

8.5
  • Housekeeping: Daily and thorough, but they are fighting a battle against the building's age.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Clean marble, but expect some discolored grout or worn sealant in corners.
  • Maintenance: Generally good, but reports of slow-draining tubs and flickering lights are not uncommon.
  • Linens & towels: High quality, crisp, and plentiful. No complaints here.
  • Odors & scents: Lobby smells of fresh orchids; corridors can have a faint 'old hotel' carpet scent.

Sleepability™

  • Long-tail boat engines on the river (early morning/late night)
  • Live music from nearby bars (Jack's Bar) drifting up to lower floors
  • Highway traffic noise for city-facing rooms

Before you book

Good to know

  • The hotel has two distinct wings: Shangri-La Wing (main, busy) and Krungthep Wing (private, quiet, own pool).
  • The free shuttle boat to ICONSIAM is a huge perk and runs frequently.
  • Join the Shangri-La Circle program before booking for potential dining discounts and Wi-Fi perks.

What to pack

  • Universal travel adapter (outlets can be older/loose)
  • Earplugs if you are a light sleeper staying on a lower floor
  • Modest clothing for visiting nearby temples (Wat Yan Nawa is close)

Room Genie

Best picks

  • Krungthep Wing Deluxe Balcony (all have river views and balconies)
  • Horizon Club rooms in the Shangri-La Wing (high floors, better renovated)

Rooms to avoid

  • Shangri-La Wing City View rooms on lower floors (noise risk)
  • Rooms near the elevators in the main wing (high foot traffic)

Room Request Genie – copy & paste

I am requesting a room in the Krungthep Wing, high floor, facing the river. If that is not possible, please ensure a Shangri-La Wing room away from the highway side to minimize traffic noise.

FAQ & Hidden tips

Everything you actually want to know before you book.

Is the pool crowded?

The main Shangri-La Wing pool gets very busy with families. The Krungthep Wing pool is exclusive to guests of that wing and is much quieter.

How is the location for transport?

Unbeatable. You are steps from the Saphan Taksin BTS Skytrain and the Sathorn Central Pier for river boats.

Does the hotel smell old?

Some guests report a 'vintage' or slightly musty smell in the carpeted corridors of the main wing, but rooms are generally fresh.

Is breakfast included?

Depends on your rate, but it is highly recommended to book a rate with breakfast as paying separately is expensive (approx. 1,300 THB/person).

Are there smoking rooms?

No, the hotel is non-smoking, but there are designated outdoor smoking areas and balconies in the Krungthep Wing allow it.

Can I walk to street food?

Yes! You are right in the Bangrak district, famous for its street food. Charoen Krung road is just outside the lobby.

Insider Tips

  • The 'Krungthep Wing' has a separate driveway and lobby—make sure your taxi drops you at the right one.

  • Happy Hour at the Horizon Club offers a serious dinner substitute with its generous canapés.

  • Walk out the back gate near the Krungthep Wing to get to the pier faster than going through the main lobby.

5 things to know before you go

  • 💡The 'bum gun' (bidet spray) is missing in many standard bathrooms, a rarity for Thailand.

  • 💡The gym is actually one of the largest and best-equipped hotel gyms in Bangkok, not an afterthought.

  • 💡You can hear the whistle of the hotel staff hailing taxis from some lower floor rooms.

  • 💡The chocolate boutique in the lobby sells excellent pralines that are cheaper than duty-free.

  • 💡There is a hidden exit to the BTS station that saves you walking around the main driveway loop.
