Why People Love It

9.138 reviews
  • Iconic water slides in most villas
  • Retractable roofs for stargazing from bed
  • Massive 'The Den' kids' club is a childhood dream

Quick Take: A playground for the 1% that nails the 'castaway chic' aesthetic but charges ruthlessly for every extra if you aren't on the unlimited plan.

Reviewed by @AngieVillaI’ve stayed in many hotels, but Soneva Jani is on another level. Waking up and sliding straight into the turquoise lagoon was the highlight of my trip. The villa is massive, private, and honestly, it brought out my inner child completely.

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

The most visually stunning resort in the Maldives with incredible service, but the 'rustic' look is starting to show actual wear in older villas.

Reality check

Guests in Chapter One often complain about the noise of waves hitting the floorboards, while Chapter Two guests rave about the silence and all-inclusive benefits.

  • You have an unlimited budget and hate signing bills
  • You are traveling with active kids (The Den is world-class)
  • You prioritize lagoon views and privacy over snorkeling

Cleanliness & Maintenance

8.5
  • Housekeeping: Twice daily and generally excellent, though the open-air nature means sand and leaves are a constant battle.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Clean, but outdoor bathrooms in the tropics mean you might see an ant or gecko. Some reports of rusty water in bathtubs in older villas.
  • Maintenance: Wood in saltwater takes a beating. Expect weathered decks and some rust on nails/hinges in Chapter One villas.
  • Linens & towels: High quality, organic cotton feel. Fresh.
  • Odors & scents: Fresh sea breeze and lemongrass. No musty smells reported.

Before you book

Good to know

  • Book 'Chapter Two' to get 'Soneva Unlimited' included (meals, spa, experiences)—otherwise, a burger can cost $50.
  • The resort runs on 'Island Time' (1 hour ahead of Male) to give you more daylight.
  • Mosquito control is excellent (Biogents traps), similar to Soneva Fushi.

What to pack

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (they provide it, but bring your preferred brand)
  • Rash guard for the slide (avoids friction burns)
  • Absolutely no shoes—you won't wear them from the moment you land

Room Genie

Best picks

  • Chapter Two (South Jetty) Sunset Water Reserves for privacy, newer build, and less wave noise
  • Villa 87 (Chapter Two) for optimal sunset views

Rooms to avoid

  • Chapter One (North Jetty) villas if you are a light sleeper (wave noise)
  • Villas near The Gathering if you want total seclusion

Room Request Genie – copy & paste

I am requesting a Sunset Water Reserve on the South Jetty (Chapter Two). We are light sleepers and specifically need a villa where the waves do not slap loudly against the underside of the floorboards.

FAQ & Hidden tips

Everything you actually want to know before you book.

Is Soneva Unlimited worth it?

Yes. Without it, food and spa prices are eye-watering (e.g., $500+ for a massage, $100+ for lunch). It's included in Chapter Two rates.

Can I snorkel from my room?

You can swim, but you won't see much. The lagoon is sandy. You need to take a boat to the house reef or other snorkeling spots.

Is the water slide dangerous?

It can be. At low tide, the water is shallow, and guests have reported scrapes from coral or hitting the bottom. Check the tide first.

What is the difference between Chapter One and Two?

Chapter One (North Jetty) is the original 2016 build; Chapter Two (South Jetty) is the 2021 expansion. Chapter Two villas are larger, quieter, and include the all-inclusive plan.

Are there mosquitoes?

Surprisingly few. The resort uses an effective trap system that has reduced the population by ~95-98%.

How much is the seaplane?

Approx. $1,300 per adult and $650 per child roundtrip. It's a 45-minute scenic flight.

Insider Tips

  • Request a 'sunset' side villa on the South Jetty for the best privacy; sunrise side faces the open ocean and can be windier.

  • The 'So Cold' ice cream room is free 24/7—go for a midnight snack.

  • You can bike between Chapter One and Two, but it's a long ride (20+ mins). Use the 24/7 buggy service if it's hot.

5 things to know before you go

  • 💡The 'rustic' wood design means you will see rust on metal fixtures and weathered timber—it's not neglect, it's the environment.

  • 💡The retractable roof is loud when opening/closing; don't do it while your partner is asleep.

  • 💡The lagoon water is milky blue, not crystal clear like in rocky atolls, due to the sand movement.

  • 💡You might spot a 'Barefoot Guardian' (butler) looking stressed—they manage everything for you and are your single point of contact.

  • 💡The 'Eco Centro' waste facility tour is actually fascinating and shows where your $3,000/night goes (sustainability-wise).
