Unrivaled location directly on the beach (no roads between you and the sand)
The Colonial restaurant serves high-end seafood with sunset views right downstairs
Sound of Atlantic waves lulls you to sleep every night
Quick Take: It's a logistical nightmare to get to the bottom of the cliff, but once you're there, you'll never want to leave.
Reviewed by @Hayleyxtravel: I stayed in this loft at Tolcarne and honestly, waking up to that skylight view was magic. Checking the surf from bed and grabbing a cocktail downstairs made it the ultimate Cornwall escape. Highly recommend for a chill beach break.
Guest Who Stayed Here Said
The hype
The views and location are world-class, but the price tag and steep access road are the main points of friction.
Reality check
You are paying for the view, not 5-star hotel service; kitchen utensils can be sparse and you might have to wait for the luggage buggy.
You are a surfer or beach bum who wants zero commute to the waves
You travel light or are comfortable driving on extreme gradients
You want a self-catering setup with a high-end restaurant attached
Cleanliness & Maintenance
9.2
Housekeeping: Generally spotless. Laminate floors make sand management easy.
Bathroom hygiene: Modern and clean, though some reports of slow-draining showers in older units.
Maintenance: High standard, but salt air takes a toll—expect minor rust on outdoor fittings.
Linens & towels: Fresh and crisp; beach towels are often provided which is a huge plus.
Odors & scents: Fresh sea air. No complaints of mustiness despite the beach location.

Before you book
Good to know
Check-in is at 4:00 PM; late arrival requires arranging a lockbox code.
There is a luggage shuttle (buggy) available to help you get bags from the top of the cliff if you don't want to drive down.
Parking is limited at the bottom; you may be directed to the public lot at the top of the cliff.
What to pack
Wetsuit (rentals available, but own is better)
Beach towels (provided, but extras help for sand management)
Grocery staples (salt, pepper, oil) as kitchen kits are often bare bones
Room Genie
Best picks
Three-Bedroom Apartment with Balcony (Top Floor): Best for unobstructed views and privacy from the public walkway.
Ocean Suites: If you want a hot tub and hotel service rather than self-catering.
Rooms to avoid
Ground floor apartments near the public steps if you value privacy during the day.
Beach Cabins if you need space (they are tiny).
Room Request Genie – copy & paste
“I would love a top-floor apartment to maximize privacy from the beach path. If possible, please allocate a unit furthest from the public access steps to minimize foot traffic noise.”
FAQ & Hidden tips
Everything you actually want to know before you book.
Is there parking right at the apartment?
Yes, but it's limited and accessed via a very steep, narrow road. Nervous drivers should park at the top and walk down.
Can I bring my dog in the summer?
NOT in the apartments. Dogs are banned from apartments May-Oct. They are allowed in 'Colonial Rooms' year-round.
Is there a swimming pool?
No. The 'Oasis Fun Pools' are nearby, but there is no pool on the property.
Is the beach private?
Technically privately owned, but open to the public. It gets very busy with day-trippers in summer.
Is there AC?
No. It's rarely needed in Cornwall, but top-floor apartments can get stuffy in heatwaves; fans are usually provided.
How many steps are there?
Over 100 steps if you walk. The slope is a 1:4 gradient.
Insider Tips
✨
The 'Wedge' surf break right in front is for experienced locals; beginners should stick to the main beach area.
✨
Book a table at The Colonial for sunset well in advance; it fills up with non-guests quickly.
✨
Use the 'luggage buggy' service—don't try to carry suitcases down the 100+ steps.
5 things to know before you go
💡The 'shuttle' is often just a staff member in a buggy/jeep, and you might have to wait for it.
💡The kitchen knives are notoriously dull (bring your own sharpener or knife if you cook seriously).
💡Mobile signal can be patchy at the bottom of the cliff; rely on the WiFi.
💡The public beach ban on dogs runs 9am-6pm in summer, so early morning beach walks are your only option with pets.
💡Delivery drivers (Deliveroo/supermarkets) often refuse to drive down the hill; you'll have to meet them at the top.
