Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino And Spa

$300-450 / night

Book this if You want a high-energy, all-inclusive playground where the pool parties are loud and the 747s are even louder.

Why People Love It

7.7516 reviews
  • Unbeatable front-row seats to the world-famous Maho Beach plane landings
  • The largest all-inclusive inventory on the island with a massive pool complex
  • Walking distance to Maho Village nightlife, casino, and duty-free shops

Quick Take: It’s the Vegas of St. Maarten—chaotic, fun, and showing its age in the elevators, but you won't care after your third rum punch.

Reviewed by @d_island_girlI stayed here for a week and it's a plane spotter's dream. My room had a perfect sunset view, and sipping cocktails while watching jets land just meters away was unforgettable. The vibe is lively and fun, though bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper!

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

Travelers love the renovated rooms and the friendly staff, but the food gets mixed reviews ('cafeteria quality') and the public areas can smell funky.

Reality check

You are paying for the location and the unlimited drinks, not 5-star luxury or gourmet dining.

  • You are an aviation geek who wants to watch planes from your balcony
  • You are a family with teens who need constant entertainment and wifi
  • You want to be in the center of the action without needing a rental car

Cleanliness & Maintenance

6
  • Housekeeping: Hit or miss. Daily service is standard, but often late in the day. Complaints about missed dust and sand are common.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Frequent reports of black mold in shower grout and water leaking onto floors due to poor shower door design.
  • Maintenance: The building is showing wear. Peeling paint, broken ice machines, and the aforementioned dirty elevators are recurring themes.
  • Linens & towels: Generally clean and crisp, though pool towels can run out by mid-afternoon.
  • Odors & scents: Public areas, especially near the pool and lower floor hallways, suffer from intermittent sewage/sulfur smells.

Sleepability™

5.5MODERATE
MODERATE
0-4LOUD
4-7.5MODERATE
7.5-10SILENT
  • Aircraft taking off/landing (7am-9pm)
  • Loud hallway conversations and slamming doors
  • Music from the pool area and nearby Maho Village bars

Before you book

Good to know

  • The 'all-inclusive' wristband is cut strictly at 11:00 AM checkout; you'll need a day pass to stay later.
  • Dinner reservations for the à la carte restaurants (The Point, etc.) must be made immediately upon arrival or via the app.
  • The beach in front of the hotel can disappear during high tide or rough swells.

What to pack

  • High-quality earplugs or a white noise machine
  • Insulated travel mug (the plastic resort cups are tiny)
  • Strong reef-safe sunscreen (shade is limited on the pool deck)

Room Genie

Best picks

  • Premier Ocean View (Floors 8-10) for the best plane spotting clearance over the palm trees
  • Corner rooms for slightly more square footage and fewer shared walls

Rooms to avoid

  • Lower floor 'Pool View' rooms (noise central)
  • Rooms near the elevator banks (high foot traffic and noise)

Room Request Genie – copy & paste

I am requesting a 'Premier Ocean View' room on the highest possible floor (8, 9, or 10) facing Maho Beach. We are aviation enthusiasts and hoping for a clear view of the runway above the tree line. Please avoid rooms directly adjacent to the elevator bank.

FAQ & Hidden tips

Everything you actually want to know before you book.

Is the airplane noise unbearable?

It's loud but thrilling. The big jets stop around 9 PM, so it won't keep you up all night, but daytime naps on the balcony are impossible.

Is the beach private?

No. All beaches in St. Maarten are public. Maho Beach is famous and gets very crowded with cruise ship tourists during the day.

Can I use the facilities at Sonesta Ocean Point?

Only if you book a room there. Maho Beach guests do NOT get access to the Ocean Point (adults-only) pools or restaurants.

Is the casino inside the hotel?

It's directly across the street in Maho Village, about a 2-minute walk from the lobby.

Do I need a car?

No. You are 5 minutes from the airport and right next to bars/shops. Taxis are plentiful for excursions.

Is there a resort fee?

No hidden resort fee on top of the all-inclusive rate, but expect incidental holds and fees for lost wristbands.

Insider Tips

  • The 'Oasis' swim-up bar gets crowded; the 'Palms Grill' bar often has a shorter line.

  • Walk 5 minutes to 'Little Jerusalem' for the best shawarma on the island if you get sick of the buffet.

  • The sunset view from the 10th-floor hallway window is almost as good as the rooftop bar.

5 things to know before you go

  • 💡The elevators are notoriously slow, hot, and often dirty—take the stairs if you can.

  • 💡There is a distinct 'sewage' or sulfur smell that occasionally wafts through the lower pool area.

  • 💡The 'beach access' is actually a gate with a security guard and a flight of stairs; it's not a walk-out beach resort.

  • 💡You have to pay for a day pass if your flight is late and you want to eat/drink after 11 AM checkout.

  • 💡The 'Premier' rooms are basically the same size as standard rooms; you are paying strictly for the view height.
