Kikoi Boutique Hotel

$150-250/ night

Book this if You want the rare Zanzibar combination of East Coast seclusion and West Coast sunsets without the crowds.

Why People Love It

8.3140 reviews
  • Located on the 'sunset side' of the Michamvi peninsula (rare for the east coast)
  • Alex at the front desk is a one-man concierge army who actually solves problems
  • Private plunge pools in the Deluxe Apartments are a game-changer during low tide

Quick Take: A charmingly imperfect boutique stay where the sunset views are five-star but the shower water is salty.

Reviewed by @Luci.LuxyMy stay at Kikoi was the romantic escape we desperately needed. Having our own private pool just steps from the white sand was a dream. It’s rustic, breezy, and incredibly peaceful—honestly, I didn't want to leave that hammock or the view from our bed.

The hype

Travelers love the chill vibe and spacious rooms, but consistently mention the food is average and the water pressure varies.

Reality check

The 'private pool' in some lower-tier rooms is more of a large bathtub than a swimming pool.

  • You prioritize sunsets and silence over nightlife
  • You are comfortable with 'island time' service standards
  • You plan to eat dinner at nearby spots like The Rock or Upendo

Cleanliness & Maintenance

8.4
  • Housekeeping: Daily service is reliable, though sometimes they miss dusting high shelves.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Generally clean surfaces, but the salty water causes rapid corrosion on taps and showerheads.
  • Maintenance: A bit rough around the edges—peeling paint and stiff door locks are common complaints.
  • Linens & towels: Clean but can feel stiff due to line-drying and the water quality.
  • Odors & scents: Some ground-floor rooms struggle with a damp/musty smell; air them out immediately.

Before you book

Good to know

  • Airport transfers cost ~$50-65 one way; booking via the hotel is reliable but slightly pricier than local taxis.
  • The hotel restaurant 'Wing It' is decent for lunch but limited for dinner; book elsewhere for variety.
  • Electricity cuts happen in Zanzibar; the hotel has a generator but there may be a delay.

What to pack

  • Reef shoes (essential for walking the mudflats at low tide)
  • Leave-in conditioner (to combat the salty shower water)
  • Plenty of cash (USD) for tips and local restaurants that don't take cards

Room Genie

Best picks

  • Deluxe Apartment with Sea View (Room 1 or 2) for the best sunset visibility and a usable plunge pool
  • Beachfront Bungalows for direct sand access (just watch the high tide)

Rooms to avoid

  • Standard Garden View rooms near the kitchen (noise and less breeze)
  • Any room where you detect a damp smell upon entry—request a change immediately

Hi team, we are so excited for our stay. If possible, we'd love one of the Deluxe Apartments with the best sunset view. Also, could you please double-check that the AC is fully functional and the room has been aired out prior to our arrival? Thank you!

FAQ & Hidden tips

Everything you actually want to know before you book.

Is the water in the bathroom really salty?

Yes. It is treated borehole water, which remains brackish. It's safe to shower in but tastes salty and won't lather soap well.

Can I swim in the ocean anytime?

No. Michamvi has extreme tides. At low tide, the water recedes hundreds of meters, leaving a mudflat. At high tide, the water hits the sea wall.

Is there air conditioning?

Yes, all rooms have AC, though reliability can vary. If it's not cold, ask maintenance to clean the filters immediately.

How far is The Rock Restaurant?

It's about 3.5km away. You can take a 10-minute taxi or a very long walk at low tide (not recommended at night).

Is breakfast included?

Yes, a mix of buffet and a la carte. Reviews are mixed—expect basic fruits, eggs, and toast, not a lavish spread.

Is it good for families?

It's okay, but geared more towards couples. The lack of a constant beach and salty water can be tough with small kids.

Insider Tips

  • Walk 10 minutes south to 'Kae Funk' for a more lively sunset vibe and cocktails if the hotel bar is too quiet.

  • The 'private pool' in the garden rooms is often shaded and cold; the sea view pools get the sun.

  • Don't rely on the in-room safe for super high-value items; the front desk safe is more secure.

5 things to know before you go

  • 💡The 'Wing It' restaurant specializes in chicken wings, which is random but they are actually the best thing on the menu.

  • 💡You might be the only guests at the pool during the day—it's often shockingly empty.

  • 💡The stairs down to the beach have been reported as broken/unstable in several reviews; watch your step.

  • 💡Management can be 'invisible'—if you have an issue, find Alex specifically.

  • 💡The crows are aggressive; do not leave any food unattended on your balcony even for a second.
