Nima Lodge

Book this if You want to disappear into a design-magazine cabin with a wood-fired hot tub and zero cell service (unless you want it).

Why People Love It

  • The 'Sand Cabins' are architectural marvels with curved walls and dune-inspired shapes
  • Wood-fired hot tubs on every deck with sweeping views of the Outeniqua Mountains
  • Direct access to the Kingfisher Waterfall trail without driving anywhere

Quick Take: A stunningly photogenic hideaway that forces you to relax, provided you can handle the steep dirt road to get there.

Reviewed by @richstays:Β I stayed at Nima Lodge and it was the most peaceful weekend of my life. The bathtub view is even better in person, and we spent hours just lounging on the deck watching the mist roll over the valley. If you need to disconnect, this is the place.

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

Guests are universally obsessed with the views and the 'Sand' cabin architecture, calling it a spiritual reset.

Reality check

The wifi can be spotty due to weather, and the older 'Sun' cabins sometimes have electrical trips or hot water quirks.

  • You love 'boho-minimalist' design (rattan, linen, raw wood)
  • You are comfortable with self-catering or grilling your own steaks
  • You want total privacy to use an outdoor shower or hot tub

Cleanliness & Maintenance

9
  • Housekeeping: Daily service is thorough, though guests note the occasional spider or dust bunny due to the rural setting.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Immaculate. The 'Sand' cabin bathrooms are architectural highlights and kept pristine.
  • Maintenance: Generally excellent, though 'Sun' cabins are older and have occasional electrical quirks.
  • Linens & towels: High-quality, crisp white linens and fluffy towels.
  • Odors & scents: Fresh fynbos air and the smell of woodsmoke from the hot tubs.

Before you book

Good to know

  • You must order breakfast baskets by 3pm the day before.
  • The 'Honesty Shop' has basics like pasta, wine, and chocolate, but do a full grocery run in Wilderness town before driving up.
  • Load shedding (power outages) can affect the area, though the lodge has backups for lights/wifi.

What to pack

  • Groceries for dinner (unless you plan to drive 20 mins back to town)
  • Hiking boots for the Kingfisher trail
  • A warm jacket for evening stargazing on the deck

Room Genie

Best picks

  • Sand Cabins (1, 2, or 3) β€” These are the new, architect-designed units with curved walls and the best privacy.
  • Luna Cabin β€” The largest 'honeymoon' unit with a private swimming pool (not just a hot tub) and a skylight above the bed.

Rooms to avoid

  • Sun Cabins if you hate stairs β€” they are located on a steeper section of the hill.
  • Sun Cabins if you want the ultra-modern look β€” they are the original timber cabins (though renovated).

FAQ & Hidden tips

Everything you actually want to know before you book.

Do I need a 4x4 to get there?

No, a normal sedan can make it, but the road is steep and partly dirt. An SUV with higher clearance is more comfortable.

Is there a restaurant on site?

No. They deliver breakfast baskets (optional) and offer raw 'dinner baskets' (steaks, salads) for you to cook, but otherwise it's self-catering.

Is the pool heated?

The communal pool at the Lapa is solar heated (weather dependent). The private wood-fired hot tubs at each cabin are heated by you (wood provided).

Can I bring my kids?

No, Nima Lodge is strictly 18+.

Is there air conditioning?

No, but the cabins have fans and are designed with cross-ventilation. It rarely gets uncomfortably hot at this altitude.

How far is the beach?

Wilderness Beach is about a 15-20 minute drive down the hill.

Insider Tips

  • ✨

The 'Sun' cabins have a pellet fireplace that can beep when power trips β€” ask staff for a demo on how to reset it.

  • ✨

You can hike to the Kingfisher Waterfall directly from the property (40 mins each way), saving you the park entry fee and parking hassle at the main gate.

  • ✨

The 'Honesty Shop' is open 24/7, so you can grab a late-night bottle of wine if you run dry.

5 things to know before you go

  • πŸ’‘The 'Sand' cabins have a separate 'tower' for the bathroom β€” you have to walk a few steps to pee, but the view from the loo is insane.

  • πŸ’‘The drive up is genuinely steep; nervous drivers might want to arrive before dark.

  • πŸ’‘There are resident rescue cats (like Hila) who might come say hello on your deck.

  • πŸ’‘The wood-fired hot tubs take about 2 hours to heat up β€” start the fire immediately upon arrival.

  • πŸ’‘You are bordering a National Park; baboons can be an issue if you leave food outside (keep doors locked).
