Dreams Onyx Resort & Spa

Book this if You want a high-energy family mega-resort with a killer water park, but need an escape hatch to an adults-only party next door.

Why People Love It

8.7200 reviews
  • Lazy river and water park are legitimate highlights, not just afterthoughts
  • Adults get full access to the party vibe at Breathless Punta Cana next door
  • No reservations required for à la carte dining (a rarity in DR)

Quick Take: A chaotic, fun, splash-filled family factory that delivers on volume but struggles with consistency in food and service.

Reviewed by @willianaashleyI booked Dreams Onyx specifically for this water park and it did not disappoint! I felt like a total kid again on the slides, and the lazy river is the perfect way to get around the resort with a drink in hand. Best vacation ever.

Guest Who Stayed Here Said

The hype

Families love the water park and spacious rooms, but foodies are often disappointed by the inconsistent dining quality.

Reality check

Service is a gamble—you'll either get a waiter who treats you like royalty or one who ignores you for 20 minutes.

  • You have kids aged 8-14 who will disappear into the water park for hours
  • You want to party at an adults-only resort (Breathless) but have to bring the kids
  • You hate planning dinner reservations 3 days in advance

Cleanliness & Maintenance

7.5
  • Housekeeping: Generally reliable daily service, though they often miss dusting high shelves or under beds.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Hit or miss. Newer rooms are fine; older ground-floor rooms often have grout mold and a persistent sewage/damp smell.
  • Maintenance: Showing age. Reports of peeling paint, rusting fixtures in bathrooms, and leaking AC units are common.
  • Linens & towels: Towels can be scratchy and sometimes scarce at the pool late in the day. Bed linens are standard hotel grade, nothing plush.
  • Odors & scents: The 'musty' smell is the #1 complaint for ground floor rooms. Upper floors smell much fresher.

Before you book

Good to know

  • Download the Hyatt Inclusive Collection app before you go to view menus and schedules
  • Room service is free 24/7 for everyone, not just Preferred guests
  • The environmental levy is often payable in cash at the resort (~$20)

What to pack

  • DampRid or moisture absorbers for the closet (seriously, it helps)
  • Insulated tumbler (Yeti/Stanley) – the plastic cups are tiny and melt fast
  • Small bills ($1s and $5s) for tips – service improves dramatically

Room Genie

Best picks

  • Gem Building (Building 20) for Preferred Club guests – central but quieter
  • Upper floor rooms to avoid the damp/musty smell of ground floor swim-ups

Rooms to avoid

  • Splash Building (Building 48) unless you love the sound of screaming kids at 8 AM
  • Ground floor rooms if you have asthma or mold sensitivity
  • Far east side rooms facing the construction/empty lot

Room Request Genie – copy & paste

I am requesting a room in the Gem Building (Bldg 20) on an upper floor to avoid humidity issues. Please ensure we are NOT placed in the Splash Building (Bldg 48) as we require a quiet environment.

FAQ & Hidden tips

Everything you actually want to know before you book.

Is the Preferred Club worth it?

Yes. At this specific resort, the separation is felt. You get a better pool, a dedicated lounge, and significantly better bar service.

Can I use the facilities at Breathless?

Yes! Adults (18+) have full access to Breathless Punta Cana next door, including pools, bars, and restaurants. Breathless guests do NOT have full access to Onyx.

Is the beach swimmable?

Yes, but use caution. Uvero Alto has rougher surf and stronger undertow than Bavaro. It's great for jumping waves, less so for floating.

Do I need dinner reservations?

No. All à la carte restaurants are first-come, first-served. Go early (6 PM) or late (8:30 PM) to avoid waits.

Is there a heated pool?

No. The pools can be chilly in the early morning or during winter months (Dec-Feb), though the Caribbean sun usually warms them up by noon.

Are there hidden fees?

Not really 'hidden', but expect to pay for spa treatments, wine upgrades, and private romantic dinners. The environmental tax is standard.

Insider Tips

  • The 'Coco Café' is the only place to get decent coffee; the room machines are terrible.

  • Order the 'special' drink of the day at the swim-up bar – they often use better mixers for these.

  • If the main buffet is a zoo, walk over to Breathless for breakfast (adults only) – it's often calmer.

5 things to know before you go

  • 💡The 'Lazy River' isn't actually lazy; there's a section with a bucket drop that will soak you unexpectedly.

  • 💡There is a distinct lack of cats compared to other DR resorts, which is weird but great for allergy sufferers.

  • 💡The 'Donald Duck' waiter in the main buffet is a local legend – find him for a laugh.

  • 💡You can hear the nightly entertainment from the main plaza in the 'Stone' building rooms.

  • 💡The 'Preferred Club' beach area has better chairs, but the sand is exactly the same (and the seaweed doesn't discriminate).
