  • Legitimately unique 'A-Wing' atrium that feels like a movie set
  • Thick prison walls mean cell rooms are dead silent between neighbors
  • Located smack in the Castle Quarter, steps from Westgate and colleges

クイックテイク: A novelty stay that nails the aesthetic but charges a premium for dark rooms and valet parking.

@arc.gem_adventures によるレビューI stayed in a converted cell at Malmaison Oxford and it was the coolest experience. The history is everywhere, but the bed was super comfy. Walking the old prison galleries to get to breakfast felt surreal. Highly recommend for a unique trip!

The hype

Travelers love the novelty and the central location but consistently groan about the parking cost and dark lighting.

Reality check

The 'shabby chic' is starting to lean just 'shabby' in some rooms, with reports of dusty corners and tired carpets.

  • You love industrial/historic architecture
  • You prioritize silence between rooms (thick brick walls)
  • You want a hotel bar that feels like a villain's lair

清潔さと保守管理

8.5
  • Housekeeping: Generally good, though some reports of dust on high surfaces and bedside tables.
  • Bathroom hygiene: Strong marks here—grout is usually scrubbed, but some 'damp' smells reported due to lack of ventilation.
  • Maintenance: The 'shabby chic' is showing real wear—scuffed paint and tired carpets in hallways are common complaints.
  • Linens & towels: Crisp and high quality, though the duvet can be too hot for the stuffy rooms.
  • Odors & scents: Mostly fresh, but occasional 'musty' or 'drain' smells in lower-floor bathrooms.

知っておくと良いこと

  • The 'Gym' is a tiny 'Mini-Gym' with just a Peloton and some weights—don't plan a serious workout.
  • Breakfast is not included in standard rates and costs ~£20-27pp; service is often described as slow.
  • The hotel is in a Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ); check if your car is liable for daily charges.

持ち物

  • A clip-on reading light (the rooms are notoriously moody/dim)
  • Earplugs (for the atrium echo)
  • Smaller luggage (navigating the old prison corridors/stairs is tight)

ルームジニー

おすすめ

  • A-Wing Cell Rooms (top floor) for the best balance of prison vibes and slightly better light
  • House of Correction (C-Wing) rooms if you are claustrophobic—they have normal windows

避けるべきお部屋

  • Ground floor A-Wing cells (darkest and noisiest from atrium events)
  • Rooms directly above the bar/nightclub area

ルームリクエストジニー – コピー&ペースト

I'm excited for the prison experience but prone to claustrophobia. Please assign a Cell Room on the highest possible floor for better light, or a House of Correction room if no high cells are available. Please ensure I am away from the atrium event space/bar.

FAQ と隠された便利な使い方

ご予約前に本当に知りたいことすべて

Is staying in a cell actually comfortable?

Yes, they knock three cells together (two for the bedroom, one for the bathroom), so it's spacious enough, just dark.

Do the windows open?

Barely. In cell rooms, they are original small barred windows that often don't open or only crack slightly.

Is the prison haunted?

Rumors say yes (it was a prison for 900 years), and they even run ghost tours, but most guests just complain about the AC, not ghosts.

Can I park my car there?

Only if you book the £34 valet spot in advance. Otherwise, park at the Westgate Shopping Centre (expensive) or use the Park & Ride.

Is it good for kids?

Not really. It's moody, dark, and geared towards adults/couples. The 'prison' theme might actually scare younger kids.

How is the WiFi?

Surprisingly fast and free, despite the thick stone walls.

インサイダー情報

  • Skip the hotel breakfast and walk 5 mins to 'The Breakfast Club' in Westgate or 'Vaults & Garden Café' for a better vibe.

  • Ask to see the preserved original cell in the basement—it's left in its raw state for history buffs.

  • The 'House of Correction' building is less cool but much more livable if you're staying more than one night.

行く前に知っておくべき5つのこと

  • 💡The 'exercise yard' is now a polite garden terrace where you can drink Aperol Spritzes.

  • 💡The shower pressure is often described as 'decontamination grade' (very strong).

  • 💡You might get hit with a 'discretionary service charge' on your room rate—check your bill.

  • 💡The lighting is so 'moody' that doing makeup in the bathroom is a challenge.

  • 💡It's right next to a 'Slug & Lettuce' chain bar, which somewhat ruins the spooky isolation vibe on Friday nights.
